Jeff Kalmbach's This Is Not Here: This Is Not Here

An instrumental trio led by guitarist Jeff Kalmbach, This Is Not Here issue their self titled EP through CDBaby, with words of praise from the likes of Tesla guitarist Dave Rude and author and guitarist German Schauss. On the evidence of the quirkily titled five tracks here it is easy to see why. That said, "(adj.) (n.)" which surges into life with an almost Rage Against The Machine style anger, "This Is Not Here" which pulsates through staccato bursts and the punchy drumming of Terry Branam, or "Singins Fer Jurks", which is as close to out and out shred as Kalmbach gets, won't exactly convert non believers of instrumental guitar albums to the cause.

As expected Kalmbach is a fine, fiery player and Branam and bassist Marco Guzman provide the mix of funk, soul, rock and metal their band leader requires to make it happen. "Naked Pictures Of Lobster Boy (Bizarre And Grotesque Tales Of Love On The Midway Pt 1)" groovin' like a good 'un and "No Pance Dantz" kickin' like Zep.

In the end it will come down to whether you need another guitar instrumental release in your collection. This Is Not Here is good, but it won't change your world. Kalmbach is superb, and while not just following the tired path of instrumental Rock, he's not really offering much that isn't out their already, even if his mix is decidedly less straight than some. However for its short duration there is still plenty to recommend about this EP, even if I can't promise it will become a fixture on your playlist.
