Power metal overload from these German titans Victorious who return with second album The Awakening that is direct no nonsense modern day melodic metal of the very finest vintage. The five piece have been around for a few years and released debut album Unleash The Titans via the independent route, newly signed to SPV /Steamhammer for this follow-up effort the label have spotted the bands undoubted potential and rightly so. Busting straight out of the gates (of hellfire no doubt) with 'Age of Tyranny' the pace is relentless, the hooks are plenty and the screams of vocalist David Babin are right up there with the very best of them. Victorious style themselves as Saxonian metal alongside names such as Heaven Shall Burn and Alpha Tiger but lovers of leading power metal exponents Blind Guardian, Hammerfall and Freedom Call will no doubt find much to appreciate here.
Raising the tempo still further with 'Starfire' the crisp and clear production does the band plenty of favours, each sword wielding riff and battalion of percussion being very much at the forefront. 'Under Burning Skies' is another winner with the memorable chorus and keyboard flourishes making it one of the stand out moments. The lyrics follow the well worn path of galloping off into battle and coming up against legions of the damned ('Demon Legions'), claiming your birthright ('Kings Reborn') and standing up and being counted ('Call for Resistance') but it's all about the execution which thankfully Victorious are able to deliver throughout. A good solid album that is well worth a listen.
