Alternine: 2.0

The French band Alternine play a heavier brand of alternative rock and have recently released their second EP 2.0. Their self-titled debut EP was released in 2008. In the band are Laetitia Jehanno (vocals), Julien Névo (bass guitar), Benoȋt Toquet (guitar) and Robin Tixier-Bagot (drums). According to the press release they are influenced by bands like A Perfect Circle, Tool, Nine Inch Nails and The Mars Volta. I suppose I do hear a bit of those bands in 2.0 but their music is not quite as complex as Tool for example. That's not to say it isn't good as I quite enjoyed this short little platter.

"Crystal Shards" opens the disc with chiming guitar chords and excellent lead vocals from Jehanno. She has a crisp clean voice and not overly dramatic which is a refreshing change as that style seems to be so popular with so many bands these days. She can however belt it out when called upon and when she does she's bang on. Here her voice becomes a little grittier which melds nicely with her softer vocals.

"Beneath the Sun" is a little mellower with cool sustaining guitars and marching drums. This isn't complex stuff but is a fun listen nevertheless.

My two favourites are "Hollow", with a cool fuzzy bass tone and swirling guitars and "Salvya", the most proggy song here with crashing rhythms, fluid bass work and contrasting shades of heavy and soft.

The album ends with the straight forward rocker "Dead on Time".

Alternine has definite potential so hopefully they will get their due. I for one would like to see what they do with a full length release.
