Leperton: Leperton

Leperton is the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Josiah Babcock. Leperton started in 2011 when Babcock teamed with bass player Trevor Hoffmann when they were both serving as U.S. marines. It has taken a couple of years for the album to be completed and I have to say it is pretty good. I had no idea what to expect as information about the band was hard to find but I was pleasantly surprised. The album runs the gamut from ambient to post rock/metal to death metal. Things are kept interesting as many of the songs offer changes from one style to the next.

In the ten minute opening track "Abandonment" an ambient beginning soon leads to a post rock build culminating in a full death metal assault complete with growls and pummeling riffs. The song reverts to a calmer post rock vibe with spacious guitar and a much slower pace.

"Ascension" has the band heading in a post metal direction before slow, dirge-like chords give it a doom metal twist. The clean vocals are quite nice and the slow bending guitar solo is pretty trippy. Growled vocals return as the song ends on a heavier note.

My favourite song is the poignant "Solace". Babcock's softly sung plaintive vocals are a nice change from the growls and the guitar carries a hint of melancholy. Soon the heaviness returns with a wall of sound but the catchiness is still retained.

Leperton should satisfy fans of post rock/metal, melodic death metal and heavier music in general. The melodies are catchy and the performance is very good. The fact this music was created by two people makes it all the more impressive. Hopefully a label will snatch this up sooner rather than later.
