The Kandinsky Effect are Warren Walker (saxophone, effects), Gaël Petrina (bass, effects), and Caleb Dolister (drums, laptop), and their new Cuneiform Records release Synesthesia is a fun, quirky slice of avant-garde jazz. Considering that the band are only three members with a limited amount of instruments used, the sound is pretty full here and gives the impression of a much larger ensemble, especially on the vibrant opener "Johnny Utah". Walker's sax explodes over intricate rhythms on the upbeat "M.C.", while the darker, more acoustic tinged jazz pieces "Cusba", "WK51", and "Walking..." showcase Dolister's nimble stick work and a more tender side to Walker. In fact, though Walker's sax is often the main focus of these songs, it's Dolister's deft, intricate drumming that generally steals the show here, and Petrina's rumbling bass grooves on "Mexican Gift Shop" is right there alongside him. While the use of electronics on some songs add an avant-garde flair, a good majority of what you'll hear on this album is actually very solid, smoky jazz, as is the case on the alluring "Lars Von Trier", with Walker's boozy sax explorations pushing all the right buttons.
While not the most groundbreaking release from the folks at Cuneiform this year, Synesthesia is still enjoyable for all those who like their jazz slightly off the beaten path.
