Formed from the ashes of Immortal Rites, Dawn of Dreams, and Apophis, Germany's Revel in Flesh released Deathevokation in 2012, and they are quickly coming back with the follow-up, Manifested Darkness. This is well-produced, old school styled death metal, probably closest to the Swedish scene of the early/mid-'90s, nothing fancy, yet all around quite solid. 'Broken glass in the throat' screams mixed with deep, deep growls & grunts, raging riffage (but nothing technical) and pounding drums make up the core of the Revel in Flesh sound, and while nothing here on Manifested Darkness is overly compelling, it's hard not to like pummeling songs like "Deathmarch", "Torment in Fire", or the crushing "Rotting in the Void". And, of course, any extreme metal fan has to love an album with a tune titled "The Maggot Colony", right? It's all expertly played and tight, and while as I mentioned, nothing is going to jump out at you here and scream 'classic', as a more than solid old school styled death metal album, this one is a good one.
