Ten albums in, and stoner kingpins Monster Magnet are still making exciting music and show no signs of slowing down. Last Patrol is the latest collection of hard rocking psychedelia from the band, who once again allow their 'Hawkwind meets Black Sabbath' style to come to the forefront and shatter your senses. Vocalist/guitarist Dave Wyndorf seems to be taking the band down avenues explored on such classic releases as Dopes to Infinity, Superjudge, and Spine of God (all landmark '90s records), as there is a more pronounced 'space rock' feel here, especially on the stunning title track, the raging "Mindless Ones", and the doomy slice of psychedelia that is "Three Kingfishers". Heavy riffs, swirling synths, and effects laden vocals...yep, the CLASSIC Monster Magnet sound folks. "I Live Behind the Clouds" and "Paradise" have a somewhat bluesy feel to them, while "Hallelujah" is more of a funky hard rock piece that's not unlike what you'd expect from Clutch. Mellotron meets up with bluesy acoustic guitar on the addicting "The Duke (of Supernature)", and the band goes for that spacey hard rocking sound made famous by the legendary Hawkwind on "End of Time". The creepy "Stay Tuned" closes out the set with Wyndorf's spoken word vocals, acoustic guitar, and eerie synths, a sort of 'Western styled space rock' if you will, as the band walks off into the sunset.
Napalm Records still seems like a strange home for Monster Magnet, but they are a good band to have on your roster and have created a winner here for the label. Last Patrol is a good mix of their classic sounds as well as some of their more modern elements.
