Sons of Hippies: Griffons at the Gates of Heaven

"High in the mountains of Tennessee, Sons of Hippies was conceived amid fellow music lovers at a festival, on a 700-acre farm, on a sunny June afternoon" (http://www.sonsofhippies.net/, 2013. How could I even think of changing that lead – in from their website? Not happening.

Sons of Hippies is founded on the knowledge that yes, Brazilian native Jonas Canales, lead guitar, and Florida-bred Katherine Kelly, lead vocals, were, indeed, children of hippies. The dreamy and melodic music they create will put a smile on your face and at times take you back to the Summer of Love. At least the first two tracks "Forward" and "Mirrorball" share that tempo, melody and feel. Bassist David Daly joined Sons of Hippies in 2011.

But don't get too comfortable, "Dark Daisies" is not only darker it is a lot heavier. In fact, half of the album is a great set of powerful punk – packed sound with the other half sharing that psychedelic sitar inspired reflection. A great 1-2 combo that is sure to inspire many to want to hear both parts.

Katherine Kelly's voice is wonderful. A unique girly sound that at times brings back memories of either Deborah Harry or Terry Nunn of Berlin, depending on the power of the song. At times you can even hear a little Belinda Carlisle or Susanna Hoffs, just to permeate that hippie sound and glow.

Griffons at the Gates of Heaven was mixed by Jack Endino, ( Nirvana, L7, Mudhoney ), and mastered at Abbey Road Studios by Andy Walter (Radiohead, David Bowie, U2). Sons of Hippies enlisted the guidance of Pro-Pain guitarist Tom Klimchuck who produced and played bass on the band's March '09 debut, Warriors of the Light. His insight and direction helped Sons of Hippies receive the critic's choice award from Tampa's popular Creative Loafing publication for "Best Modern-Sounding Record" of 2009.

Every track on Griffons at the Gates of Heaven is a keeper. Full of the fun and frivolity of the age they were conceived in and have embraced with fervor. Pop this CD in the car and let the sound bounce off the walls as you ride through the sunshine.
