Mitchell, Kenny: Voyager

Kenny Mitchell is an independent, musician based in the north east of England. On Voyager, he plays all instruments in this instruments only symphony. Voyager is a journey through two very long, over 25 minutes, tracks of brilliant soft acoustic guitar, Gilmour – like launching lead electric riffs, atmospheric keyboards, and solid bass and drums. This instrumental symphony at times does have a nice ambient quality to it. The album was released in January 11, 2013.

"Voyager Part 1" is an epic instrumental production, which will bring back memories of Pink Floyd's Animals, especially that slow strummed acoustic guitar over the knife's edge lead electric guitar. You can also hear some memories of Steve Howe's playing from some of your favorite Yes albums.

"Voyager Part 2" is heavier and brings to bear some of the Rush and Dream Theater comparisons. The keyboards on both tracks do at times remind you of some of Tony Bank's classic sounds from Genesis.

The third track included with the promo is "Voyager Pt 2 excerpt". It is much heavier and shorter than the other two tracks, clocking in at nearly five minutes.

If you like any or all of the bands mentioned above and you would like to hear something new that harkens back to their signature sounds, without vocals, then this is a great album choice.

My Score:

I fully agree. I listened to this album several times when it was live on the progstreaming website and enjoyed it more with each listen. Very fine indeed.
