Grave: Morbid Ascent

Grave are a band that just seemingly can do no wrong, as they've delivered brutal, punishing death metal now for over 20 years. Morbid Ascent is their brand new EP, and it contains 3 new songs, as well as a cover of the Satyricon track "Possessed" and a remix/edit of a tune from their 2012 release Endless Procession of Souls. "Venial Sin" kicks things off, and it's a brilliantly crushing piece, the band as always never failing to deliver some of the best riffs in all of death metal. The title track takes thing to another level, relying less on speed on instead destroying the landscape with brutal, mid-paced riffs and snarling vocals. While Satyricon's version of "Possessed" is great, Grave give it a rampaging, speedy death metal take, and it's just astounding, a real headbanger's delight, and possibly better than the original. "Epos" is essentially remixed, and if it's possible that this version is heavier, then they've done it. "Reality of Life" is the other new song on the EP (though it dates back to the 1980's), and while it might be the weakest song here it's still a cranking slab of brutal death metal as only Grave can deliver.

This is just blistering stuff from start to finish, expertly produced and just devastating throughout the less than 30 minute run time. Brutal death metal doesn't get much better than Grave ladies and gentleman, and this little EP will more than hold us over till their next full length platter.
