From Austin, TX comes Morgengrau, a old school styled death metal band named after guitarist/vocalist Erika Morgengrau. On their new CD Extrinsic Pathway she's joined by Reba (drums), Nick (guitar), and Jacob (bass), for a heavy and truly mean spirited affair. The band obviously honed their chops listening to a lot of Death, Immolation, Morbid Angel, Deicide, and Pestilence, so look for high octane, brutal riffing, evil vocal growls, and lyrics dealing with death, destruction, and war. Honestly, there's some mighty fine riffing going on here, especially on "The White Death" and the pummeling title track, with Erika delivering venomous growls not far removed from Arch Enemy's Angela Gossow. For all out sheer brutality, check out the crushing "Chocking Grove", and the groove laden, punishing arrangements of "Chemosh Enlighten" and "Polymorphic Communion" just drip with old school, early '90s death metal savagery.
There's a ton of promise here on Extrinsic Pathway, so be sure to check this one out and keep a close eye on these guys in the near future.
