Revocation: Revocation

Hot on the heels of their 2011 album Chaos Of Forms comes the self-titled release from Massachusetts technical death metal/thrash act Revocation. This fourth album from the band features the line-up of David Davidson (guitars / vocals), Dan Gargiulo (guitars / vocals), Phil Dubois (drums), and Brett Bamberger (bass / vocals), and I can tell you after seeing them live recently that they are firing on all cylinders and at the peak of their powers, which you can hear throughout this CD. Technically speaking, the band has never been tighter and more in touch with delivering precise, complex extreme metal music that at the same time is completely memorable. Killer guitar riffs abound on sledgehammer tracks like "The Hive", "Archfiend", and "Invidious", each one a raging thrasher with equally impressive rhythms and virtuoso lead guitar work, while the more straightforward tracks "Fracked" and "The Gift You Gave" show that the band are not just about technical wizardry. If it's all about insanely complex & brutal arrangements that you crave however, look no further than "Spastik", as Davidson & Gargiulo put on a real clinic, and the frantic thrash rifffest that is "Entombed By Wealth" packs a violent wallop , complemented by equally venomous vocal growls.

I need to point out also that there is a good amount of 'groove' here on Revocation is well, so as not to scare off any listeners who shy away from albums that are loaded with technical precision. There's some catchy stuff to be found on this CD for sure, but yes it is complex and quite brutal. Revocation are quickly becoming one of the must see & hear bands on the Relapse Records roster, and this latest is another winner in their growing discography.
