Church of Void: Dead Rising

Though their members also spend time in the symphonic metal group Battlelore as well as black metal act Horna, it's with this band that the Finns get their doom groove on. Dead Rising is Church of Void's latest release for Svart Records, and it's a solid collection of thudding riffs, bleak atmosphere, and even some old school styled metal. If you are expecting a Black Sabbath inspired riff fest, you've come to the wrong place, as Church of Void are more about melodies & atmosphere than dark, crushing guitar dirges. Tracks like "Tristess" and "Winter is Coming" conjure up classic metal riffing with haunting, almost gothic tinged melodic vocals, and both "Dead Rising" and "Entity of Kalypso" tread along with a sort of mid-period Katatonia or My Dying Bride melancholia. The lead vocals of Magus Corvus are quite good throughout, and he really soars on the near 9-minute closer of Gothic doom "Little Child Lost".

Solid stuff all around here on Dead Rising, and while parts of the album have a somewhat 'samey' feel, it's all well executed and should certainly appeal to anyone into dark, melodic, and melancholic Gothic doom.
