Committee; The: Holodomor

Four musicians of different nationalities come together to give a voice to those who died during Soviet Russia's famines of the 1930s, with a suitably detached image of Stalin on the cover of their four track EP Holodomor (which translates to the Ukraine famine). Therefore I don't have to tell you that The Committee aren't exactly a laugh a minute, but their blackened doom, while staying safe, is convincing enough and stands up to repeat listens. Add to that the odd snippet of traditional Russian music woven unobtrusively through the songs and four minutes or so of what would appear to be authentic Russian marching music to close the CD out and what Igor Mortis (The Conspirator), William Auruman (The Charter), Aristo Crassade (The Trigger) and Marc Abre (The Mediator) have come up with is unavoidably attention grabbing, even though there are countless bands out there employing their musical style to equal, or even greater effect.

Not exactly earth shattering and far from original, there's still no denying that the sharp stabs of guitar and droneful vocals captivate, while the off-kilter and well researched subject matter offers something slightly out of the ordinary, even if "Utopian Deception", or "Not Our Revolution" are pretty standard fare. That said the actual execution of the songs is precise and ferociously hard hitting.

An interesting EP, but whether this approach will hold the attention in the same fashion across a full album, I'm not quite so sure.
