Miller, Rick: Immortal Remains

I am still a little behind my listening when it comes to Canadian multi-instrumentalist Rick Miller and that is a shame because this guy is incredibly talented and the albums I have heard (Dark Dreams and Falling Through Rainbows) are both excellent. His new album Immortal Remains continues in the same vein; richly played progressive rock, very melodic and wrapped in a veil of darkness creating an overall melancholic sound. In fact, Immortal Remains just might be his most personal and introspective album yet, at least of the albums I have heard.

First a warning; this is not happy music. If you are feeling depressed perhaps listen to something a little more upbeat. That said, Miller has a knack for writing great melodies and the new songs carry on that tradition.

The album opening "Rats In My Darkness" begins with an atmospheric, ambient intro with cool spacey sound effects and droning sounds before softly struck keys converge on the soundscape. Rick's vocals are also very good as his tone is richly timbered and his delivery is slow and evenly paced sometimes reminding me David Gilmour's vocal style. No vocal histrionics here. Before long intense guitar chords enter in dramatic fashion along with the somber strains of cello and piano. "Ode To An Angel" is a four part track and is in a word, excellent. Starting with folky acoustic guitar and his warm voice before venturing into a more Floydier realm, this one has all the right stuff. Here Miler's layered guitar is an album highlight. "The Hands Of Time", at over ten minutes, is the album's longest song. Parsons-like keyboards, swirling synths and Miller's biting lead guitar make this one another fine listen.

Immortal Remains showcases Miller's innate ability to craft quality progressive rock with an artful touch and an attention to detail few artists are able to attain. Excellent stuff indeed.
