Prehistoric Pigs: Wormhole Generator
Prehistoric Pigs are a three piece stoner metal instrumental band from Italy. Their debut album Wormhole Generator is the first I have heard of this band. Pretty good stuff considering this is the band's first record and should have fans of stoner, sludge and doom coming back for more.
The band is Juri Tirelli (guitar), Jacopo Tirelli (bass) and Mattia Piani (drums). The album kicks off with "Swirling Rings Of Saturn" beginning with some pings and bleeps that gives it a somewhat spacey vibe before a heavy repeating guitar riff enters the fold. The fuzzed out riffs eventually enter sludge rock territory. "XXI Century Riots" begins with a bass intro leading to a doomy/stoner sound. I did find the riffs a bit repetitive over the course of nine minutes. One of my favourite songs has to be "Tafassaset" with its stoner vibe and psychedelic trippy guitar noodling leading to more intense sounds. There are some pretty spacey sound effects as well that helps to hold ones interest.
The rest of the album is much of the same as the songs retain many of those same elements already described although the last song "Electric Dunes" explores more ambient and spacey themes.
Although the riffs repeat a little too often for my taste Wormhole Generator is still a pretty cool album and should appeal to fans of instrumental stoner rock.
