Tedeschi Trucks Band: Made Up Mind

Many years ago I had a horrific interview for a position as a sound engineer for the BBC. Needless to say I didn't get the job as my mathematic skills are virtually non-existent. However, I did learn during the course of the interview exactly how stereo works and how stereo helps the listener to work out exactly where everybody and everything is in the room being recorded. Therein lies one of the many, many joys of Made Up Mind. Namely that everything is in exactly the correct spot for this is a pristine, virtually faultless album and the first time I have ever unleashed the full five stars.

In many ways the TTB are a remarkably easy band to revue; basically the world's most emotive female singer (Susan Tedeschi) sings infront of the most sublimely wonderful band with Derek Trucks providing hitherto unheard of genius on the slide guitar and yes the unheard genius bit is a seriously massive claim isn't it? If you are in any doubt give a listen to "Do I Look Worried" and fall hopelessly in love with this band.

With every member of the band being so musically proficient it would be quite simple to let egos get in the way and create a horrible mish-mash especially as the album is at different turns jazz, soul, rock, pop but never does the listener feel anything but warmth and joy as for instance when the flute and guitar combine at the beginning of "Idle Wind". In practically any other band in the world Mike Mattison and Mark Rivers would be major stars, here they add glorious texture as indeed do the rest of the band who have given genuine music lovers the chance to rejoice and reject the plastic rubbish which masquerades as music in the present day. Now I must go and locate some sunglasses, slip on "Part of Me" and feel great about life.
