Various Artists: Tune In To Mind Radio-A Tribute to Multi Talented Vocalist Kelly Keeling

Vocalist Kelly Keeling, while unknown to many, has been providing his songwriting and vocal talents to the masses for over 25 years! Starting with the 80's band, Baton Rouge, where his soulful voice I first heard, to lending his mighty voice to the likes of guitar gods John Sykes (Blue Murder), John Norum (Europe), Michael Schenker and touring with George Lynch (Dokken), as well as the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Kelly Keeling has been recording and touring the world consistently. He can also be found as the mainstay voice with Carmine Appice on his Guitar Zeus project performing with some of the elite Rock guitar players on the planet, as well as and many other projects.

Kelly Keeling has been a favorite of mine for years and Surgeland Records have released an eclectic tribute to Keeling and his work via the Tune In To Mind Radio CD, featuring the legendary drummer, Carmine Appice and bass player extraordinaire Tony Franklin. This 6 track disc consists of songs written by or influenced by Keeling, but performed by others. "Perfect Day", with its catchy and soaring vocal lines, is a song that you could easily hear on any contemporary adult radio station, while the instrumental "In and Out of Time" is funky and grooving and the complete opposite. Each of the 6 songs is different from the next but all show the complexity of Keeling's ability to write in different styles and genres.

I am a very big fan of Kelly Keeling's writing and especially his voice (which is very much in the Paul Rodgers, Chris Cornell type of vein) but this record did not pick 6 of his best songs to showcase and I found this a tad boring. The overall idea of a tribute to a musician that is completely not even close to a household name is also a bit of a stretch of an idea to me, but Keeling DOES deserve more recognition, that is for sure. But unfortunately this record will not be the vehicle for more attention.
