Death Trip: Pain is Pain—The Complete Death Trip 1988-1994

I was just reading the other day (in Louder Than Hell, that oral history of heavy metal everyone's talking about) about Iggy Pop and The Stooges. As everyone knows, The Stooges were heavily influential, not only in the budding metal scene, but also in the punk world. Unfortunately, when I was growing up, Iggy Pop was a solo artist producing rather boring like "Wild One." Things change.

Death Trip, as some readers may already know, is a Finnish band that owes a great deal to bands like The Stooges. This release offers listeners a chance to hear all three of their original 7" singles in one place. I've never discovered this band—and don't know much about them—but I think I can see why they've made such an impression on the Finnish underground. Their sound is very raw and distorted, a tribute to a sound that many rock fans continue to embrace. Läjä Aijälä's vocals are consistently raw and unrefined, primal and angry, the perfect blend of attitude and anger.

The music is repetitive but satisfying. Minimally structured, each song moves slowly from chord to chord, leading the listener deliberately to its distorted and raw core. On the whole, it made for pretty good listening. I especially recommend the tracks "Death Trip" and "Something." Enjoy.
