Much as I liked the previous outing from The Heavils, I had my moments of doubt come the dimming days of 2003. I mean, building your own instruments is cool and breaking new musical ground, hitting the kids with stuff they really, truly haven't heard before makes more sense than working the tired old clichés but, at some point, being new for new's sake just gets old. Take a look at Primus. Much as Les's bass patterns and Ler's sqwonky guitar parts were da chit round about 1990, it wore thinner than Kleenex miniskirt come 1994.
So, it's with more a than pleasantly surprised expression on the face of my heart that I announce that The Heavils have whipped up another can of kick ass music for ya' with Heavilution. It probably helps that Hevy Devy Devin Townsend brought the boys up to his pad to record this. The goateed one's Strapping Young Lad-ish touches appear throughout, adding a new depth to the proceedings and bending a few corners that let fresh air into the songwriting. But the band has also retained some commercial potential ("Laundry Day," for one, feels like the kind of thing that could pop up as a favorite on college radio, while "Just Got Back" should be a late-night hit somewhere) and perhaps even expanded on its already evident commercial viability.
In all, Heavilution may not be the kind of stuff you think of reaching for first thing in the morning but that's mostly because until you've heard Heavilution you've had no room in your imagination for this band or its music. And face it, now that you have it's become so crave-worthy that it could easily replace the bong in your morning wake and bake routine.
