All Pigs Must Die: Nothing Violates This Nature

All Pigs Must Die draws on musicians from Converge, Bloodhorse, The Hope Conspiracy, and others. I'm a little reluctant to call them a supergroup, mostly because I get tired of that label. Why must bands formed from other good bands be "super?" Lots of musicians play in multiple projects and find not only creative inspiration in doing so but also the chance to explore new ideas and sounds. Nice work if you can get it.

I never heard the last release from All Pigs Must Die, but I knew that this new one was highly anticipated. As I listened to this album, I can easily understand why. These guys write strong music that fuses metal and hardcore styles in a direct, no-nonsense way. They also have a canny knack for weaving melodic passages into most of the songs at just the right times, giving their music variety and interest in unexpected and exciting ways.

I was impressed with this album, mostly because it surprised me. Given the name—and some of the comments in the promotional materials—I was expecting just another brutal assault on my ears, an album spewing hate and aggression. To be fair, this album is most of those things—this is extreme metal, after all—but there's something more here, a quality that's harder to describe. I think it has something to do with the overall confidence of the sound. These guys sound like they've taken a deep breath and let their music come forward in that wonderful space where calmness meets action. Sure, these guys have been doing this music thing for a long time, but they play well together, creating a sound that both memorable and strong.
