Exitus: Statutum Est Hominibus Mori

Exitus were a Finnish doom/trash band that only existed for a year between 1989-1990 before splitting up and disappearing forever. However, they left behind this little demo, Statutum Est Hominibus Mori, which apparently slowly became somewhat influential on the underground circuit, and our buddies at Svart Records have now reissued this little gem on vinyl & CD for all those (and there are probably many) who didn't check this out the first time around. Many of the riffs are crushingly heavy here, though the arrangements aren't slow and ponderous like most doom acts, instead Exitus often lurch into speedier, often thrash styled romps, like on "Black Heritage", though "Reprobate" does approach Pentagram/Saint Vitus territory at times, and "Tears of Despair" most definitely is a slow dirge you won't want to miss. The best is saved for last on the pulverizing "Thanatos", as agonizing vocals and pounding drums collide with massive riffs for a full-on doom metal attack. Though it all you get a hint of early Celtic Frost, Hellhammer, and Cathedral, and while Statutum Est Hominibus Mori isn't the most original doom album you'll ever hear, its appeal is more than evident and I can see why that cult status has been achieved.
