Black Magician: The Pursuivant EP

Svart Records are coming out with some tasty, doomy, retro styled treats these days, and this latest from British act Black Magician is a perfect example. The Pursuivant EP is like an ungodly midnight jam session between Celtic Frost, Saint Vitus, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Genesis, and Pentangle, with tortured vocals, crushing doom riffs, massive Hammond organ & Mellotron, and gorgeous folk based acoustic guitar & flute. The title track just pummels you with behemoth riffs and Jon Lord/Ken Hensley drenched Hammond, while "Grene Knyght" is folky prog dripping with Mellotron and acoustic guitar. Before you know it, the Hammond comes roaring back for the psychedelic/prog freakout that is "Black Henbane", and just like that this fun little EP is done and you are left wanting for more. Let's hope next time this intriguing band will give us a little more than the less than 15-minutes on display here.
