Mystery: 2013

Seldom was an album title less apt than this one. This is one of the more anachronistic records that has been my pleasure/displeasure (delete where applicable) to review, Mystery are a quartet of unfeasibly young Australians who must have been crugenically frozen in the early 1990s as grunge took hold of the world and are now back, ready to continue as if the last couple of decades hadn't actually occurred.

They've toured with Kissin' Dynamite who are a fairly apposite comparison. Mystery are by no means as fully rounded as their German mates but they show promise particularly on their original songs such as "Test of Time". If we take away the opening "2013 A New Dawn" which is one of those somewhat irritating go nowhere intro pieces and the two cover versions at the end what in fact we have, is a decent introduction to a band who will doubtless do much better things in the future. As for the covers; quite why anybody would cover Dio is beyond me as quite frankly there's only one person who can sing those songs and it isn't Rocky Ravic. The cover of Men At Work's "Down Under" has to be heard to be believed. I can't make my mind up if its utter crap or genius, rather like the rest of the album.
