Tausig, Jay: Scorpio: Water Dragon and Fire Bird

Jay Tausig has returned! The Trip Around the Sun continues with the latest edition Scorpio: Water Dragon and Fire Bird.

Close your eyes and let the water flow through your headset. Relax to the sound of slow plucked guitar and spacey keys as wordsmith Thom Worldpoet unfolds his latest Zodiac tapestry on the opening track, "The Power is Yours".

"The Scorpion" opens with exotic keys and scintillating synthesizers. But it doesn't last long. The power drums, heavy bass and Jacqueline Taylor's rhythmic lead guitar enters the soundscape full of dimensional arrogance. Sit back and enjoy the ride.

"Blood and Bone" opens with some intergalactic keys surrounding Bridget Wishart's classy echo vocals. Nice. But this journey will take us well beyond the eight minute mark and I hope your safety belt is locked securely in place because you are headed off to dreamland. Tausig lays down some almighty lead electric riffs as well as some dripping heavy bass which is well intertwined with flute like keys. Dreamland arrives. Soak in the peace and tranquility while you can. Escape from the known…into the unknown. Yes…"I've just closed my eyes again. Climbed aboard the Dreamweaver Train". The power chords of "Children of the Sun", the whirlwinds of "Fly Like an Eagle" and the awesome expanse of synth arrays from Dreamweaver, all wrapped into one song. Yes, take me back.

"Shades of November" opens with keys sounding like something off the 2001: A Space Odyssey's soundtrack, mixed with those questioning keys from Close Encounters. Great mix. Then the brooding bass and floating lead electric guitars pull their way through the clouds of keyboard rhythms, along with strong drums and a distinctly Floydian sounding rhythm. Those slow moving saw blade guitar sounds you remember from Wishing or Animals. Click drone and organs performed by Don Falcone. Excellent.

"Intuition" takes us in a completely different direction. Deep bass, subtle keys, acoustic guitar mixed well with lead electric and solid drumming provide a soft easy pace. Another tranquil experience from Tausig. This took me back to some of Larry Fast's best work.

Rhijenerate returns to deliver her poetic visions through voice on "Scorpio Transmission". Deep bass, soothing waters, and soft keys with some serious warning tones from Rhijenerate.

"Jealousy" opens with keys squirting from one ear to the other before powerful bass and heavy chords rock the soundscape. The lightning fast pace of the keys simulates space travel as the guitars gently rock their groove.

Steve Swindels opens "I'm on Fire", with "Now listen to me". "I'm like a dragon to water. Everything is in my power". Swindels invokes vocals that conjure a great combination of Jim Morrison and Ian Astbury…without the swagger.

"Passion" is an over thirteen minute explosion of keyboard, synthesizer and lead guitar passion. The heavy bass fills in any space well. Wall to wall synth explosion. Nothing to do but to lay back and try to take it all in.

"The Firebird Sings" is a beautiful acoustic guitar lead inspirational track full of Sasha Soukup's poetry and voice. The guitar work will make you wish this lasted even longer than it's just over 2 minute length.

"Sting in the Tail" is a Led Zeppelin Presence or classic Rush power guitar phaser coming at you at full speed with a weapon to unleash. The solid drums and thundering bass will rock your ear walls. Definitely lives up to its name.

"Vengeance" is an Iggy Pop or Ramone's face-smashing guitar blitzkrieg. Yes, we definitely needed this on a Tausig record!

"Metamorphosis" is another spacey galactic trip in the cosmos full of echoing narration from Thom Worldpoet and revving and roving lead electric guitar offered by Jay Tausig and Helios Creed. Delivered with the speed punch of Apollo Creed.

Ed Unitsky's artwork is up to its glorious otherworldly standards. Especially the scorpion spinning dust on the inside tray card. This album is another perfect piece to the cosmic Zodiac puzzle Tausig has been building. Glad to hear he's back and will complete the journey this year.
