Guzzlemug: Nervously Counting Rosary Beads

Originally released in late 2012 but now being made available on a limited run of 200 180 gram vinyl by Badhuman Records is the single song release by Guzzlemug titled Nervously Counting Rosary Beads. Clocking in at just under 30 minutes long, this epic track features the band, who are comprised of Shane Prendiville (guitar, guitar synth, vocals), Tom Kelly (bass, vocals, trumpet), and Charlie Werber (drums), with additional vocals from Nasimiyu Marumba & Kristen Stoeckeler and violin courtesy of Sara Pajumen. The music here is practically impossible to describe, as it's a mash-up of sludge, hardcore, pop, prog, math-metal, jazz, and anything else you can think of. One minute you have minimalistic arrangements and lovely female vocals just floating around the mix before it all violently ends and fuzz toned bass & guitar riffs come bursting through alongside tortured male vocals. Don't get used to that either, because before you know it, oddball avant-garde noises eventually morph into intricate jazz-psych-metal freakouts, not a lick of it particularly melodic, but you have to give the band credit for trying something this outrageous and adventurous. The band is at their best when Werber is rumbling away underneath it all with some tricky jazz-prog grooves and Prendiville & Kelly mount up a pulverizing metallic attack with their axes, often times either in full sludge mode or the other end of the spectrum with some complex passages. Truth be told this isn't going to be for everyone, but there's plenty of good stuff happening on this long track or EP (whatever you want to call it) to warrant a listen, and I'm sure this band is a blast to watch live.
