Cauldron: Tomorrow's Lost

Don't let the cover art fool you-this is no black metal album, nor is it anything like those technical death metal acts you would normally find on the Unique Leader label. Cauldron are a Canadian band who play a style of early '80s metal that draws not only from the NWOBHM but also a bit of the US power metal & glam rock scene of that same era. Tomorrow's Lost is competently played, features some memorable hooks, and is overall a fairly pleasing collection of tunes. Problem is, nothing here is truly outstanding, and despite a few kiss ass rockers like "Nitebreaker", "Burning Fortune", and the title track, you get a sense that this band doesn't quite know what to do with itself yet. There's an Angel Witch -meets-Shout at the Devil Motley Crue-meets-Cirith Ungol vibe going on here, which can get confusing at times. Vocals are good, guitar work decent, and the overall production of the album is ok, but repeated spins leave you a little flat and not necessarily coming back for me. Still, if a mix of '80s styled classic/power/thash/glam metal sounds appealing, give this one a try.
