Gunnelpumpers: Montana Fix

Gunnelpumpers: "A group of inspired musicians dedicated to the art of progressive, free improvisation" (http://gunnelpumpers.com/, 2013). Not to be confused with an interesting method of propelling a canoe. This Chicago – based group decided to take a musical journey on their fourth album, inspired by their bandleader, Douglas Johnson's birthplace, Montana. The dark red bison on the front cover forewarns that this will be a journey that will demand your open minded reflection.

Montana Fix is an album full of incredibly diverse styles, ranging from traditional, progressive, kraut rock, "world" music, nu jazz, experimental music, and traditional and contemporary classical. In fact, most of the tracks on Montana Fix are live studio recordings with only a few overdubs of any kind" (http://gunnelpumpers.com/, 2013).

This instrumental album is full of flutes, electric guitars, bass, drums, and all manner of percussion. Nineteen tracks of pure imagination that will take you both far and wide across the plains and high country of Big Sky Country.

They did dream big on this one. For the track "Earthling", the band even tried to simulate the "Schumann Resonances" or the "Earth Resonance Frequency (ERF)."

"Bolanger", "Naghra", "D'bass'd", "Smokeblossom", "Drunken Alley", the title track and longest song, "Montana Fix", "Puzzle Dust", "Earthling", and "Ourboros", were my favorite tracks.

This is a nineteen track album that takes some time and patience to appreciate. But if you are in the mood for something completely different, this is a great alternative album to put on the CD player.
