Ysma: Vagrant

Ysma is a German progressive rock band. The band is made up of Daniel Kluger, on electric and acoustic guitar; Fabian Schroer, on electric guitar; Torge Dellert, on bass and fretless bass; and Jens Milo, on drums, percussion, and a-cappella trumpet.

Vagrant was a nice surprise to receive for review. The entire album is an instrumental lead guitar, bass and drum adventure. Vagrant opens with a slow progression of electric bass and guitar picking mixed well on "Inchoate". They then progressive swiftly into some Rush – like explosive lead electric guitar with bass and drum support on "The Wanderer". The rest of the album is instrumental progressive music delivered with cool dramatic precision.

"Auditory Cheesecake", features the a-cappella trumpet of Jens Milo. Beyond that it is just excellent innovative guitar with great supporting bass and drums. "Penumbra" features some tight electric guitar deep bending bass and a wandering technique which fascinates.

Vagrant is a great album to pull out of your collection when you are tired of everything else and just want to hear great guitar improvisation delivered in a personal manner, as if the artists were in front of you playing. There are quiet moments like "Penumbra", "Primetime Dreaming" and "Inchoate", mixed well with heavier, more power guitar tracks like "Urville Citizen", "Flatland", with its reaching and screeching guitar licks, and "Moth", with its heavy metal deep bass.
