Bulbs: On

Well, Bulbs latest effort, On, has been called, "Wild and wonderful music" by none other than Jon Anderson, Yes' legendary vocalist. Bulbs is from the legendary "birthplace" of modern rock Liverpool, UK, so this band already has a lot going for it.

The band includes: Joey Zeb, on drums; Andy Maslivec, on bass and vocals; Neil Campbell, on guitars and keyboards; and Marty Snape, on engineering and electronics.

Neil Campbell is a virtuoso solo guitarist, and every track on this instrumental album contains his excellent presence. Campbell is currently 'Inventioning', a new composition with Jon Anderson, of Yes.

The spacey synth electronics and guitar soloing on "Lament" are one of the golden highlights of this album. The heavy bass intro on "Frankincensed" bring back memories of Pink Floyd. The guitar work and spacey electronics that surround this production, at times remind me of Jay Tausig's "Trip Around the Sun", only heavier. The narration on "Frankincensed" foretells of an eerie future controlled by machines. "Injusa" is a wonderful acoustic guitar exploration despite the backmasting vocals at the opening.

This instrumental prog album was a nice surprise. On is as Jon Anderson described it, "wild and wonderful". The guitar work is both entertaining and at times very relaxing. The music paints a picture that words would only spoil. The keyboards, also performed by Campbell, will stun and amaze throughout. All of the tracks are full of innovation and emotion, and there are no "throw aways" here. If you need something interesting and different to listen to, this is the ticket to imaginative sounds.
