Dio: Finding the Sacred Heart-Live in Philly 1986 (Blu-ray)

Filmed on June 17, 1986 at The Spectrum in Philadelphia on the Sacred Heart tour, Finding the Sacred Heart-Live in Philly 1986 is presented here in high definition Blu-ray format, with, for the first time, the complete concert as it was played that evening. As someone who happened to see that tour (at their stop in New Jersey), it truly was a high point in the career of Dio. Though original guitarist Vivian Campbell had recently left, the band was able to get Giuffria axe-slinger Craig Coldy for the album and tour, and he fit right in alongside Ronnie, Vinny Appice, Jimmy Bain, and Claude Schnell. With a full blown stage set-up, including the giant dragon head and an enormous light show, the Sacred Heart Tour was a marvel to behold.

As I mentioned above, the entire show is included here for the first time, so you not only get all the songs but the drum, keyboard, and guitar solos as well. It was the '80s after all, so metal bands were still doing the extended solos, and they've been preserved here for you to enjoy. Mr. Dio is in fine vocal form as always, perhaps at the peak of his powers, and the band chugs through stellar renditions of "Sacred Heart", "Don't Talk to Strangers", "Hungry for Heaven", "Stand Up and Shout", plus a host of others as well as some medleys containing classic Dio, Rainbow, and Black Sabbath material. The picture quality is pretty damn good considering the source material is getting on in age, though in spots the audio seems a little out of sync with the video. Speaking of the audio, it starts out a little rough but improves as the show goes on. It's remastered and pretty decent, though I've heard better on Blu-ray to be honest.

For those who crave bonus material, this one has some fun interviews with Dio and the band, as well as a tour featurette and music videos. It's all done '80s style, but that only adds to the charm of it all, especially if you followed the band back in the day. As a great tribute to the talent that was the late Ronnie James Dio, this Blu-ray does a fine job.
