Blinded by Faith: Chernobyl Survivor

This album actually came out last year, but it didn't really stick with audiences. I can see how that can happen; tons of new releases come out every week and it's pretty difficult to keep up with them all, let alone review them. It's also true that some good albums are sometimes overshadowed by great albums, sometimes even just the over-hyped ones. This is an old problem, of course, something that happens with movies, television shows, and other similar things. In response, some promoters are basically reintroducing albums to listeners, hoping that a second chance at life will give a good album a stronger performance.

Is Chernobyl Survivor worth checking out?

Yes, it is. It's a pretty intense album, mostly straight-ahead death metal with a little bit of melody mixed in from time to time. It runs a little long and the songs tend toward the same generally patterns, but it sounds good and certainly has some real highlights. I was really impressed with the occasional use of twin guitar harmonies and the some of the riffs. Check out, for example, "So Speak the Voice of Law." Sometimes, there's another sound going on in the background—a synthesizer, I think—that gives the music an otherworldly quality. It's used sparingly, but it is also pretty distracting. The lyrics are all but unrecognizable without a lyric sheet because of the harsh vocal style. I looked up some of them online and found them to be just as extreme as the music, sometimes explicit both in language and in content. At times, the words engaged some pretty intelligent real-world problems.
