Man Made Sun: More A Devil Than A God

New York band Man Made Sun's debut EP More A Devil Than A God came out in January of this year. The album was recorded in the band's basement studio and is self-released. The players are Eran Asias (drums), Yonatan Levy (bass), Shahar Mintz (guitar) and Ofer Tiberin (vocals, guitar, programming). Tiberin is formerly of the Israeli band Emok.

According to the press release the band is influenced by Rage Against The Machine which I personally cannot verify as I have never heard that band's music. The Prodigy is also listed as an influence and I do hear bits and pieces, especially in their use of programming. They play a brand of alternative metal and have some pretty catchy chord progressions throughout the disc. It is pretty heavy stuff although they do include quieter sections when the riffs are not so up front.

The first track "God Vs God" rocks hard right from the start with Middle Eastern tinged guitar riffs and some pretty neat programming (this is where the Prodigy enters the picture). For me the vocals are just okay but adequately suit the song, although they have started to grow on me the more I listen.

My favourite song is "Signal" with its uber cool Prodigy-like intro and swirling guitar riffs. It is probably the most creative song here. The title track is another high point, especially the imaginative guitar riffs. More A Devil Than A God is not perfect by any means but it is quite an interesting debut from a promising new band that will only get better with time. If you like alternative metal by all means check it out.
