Cosgrove, David: Gift Of Time

Based out of Connecticut, David Cosgrove has been playing music for three decades and is a former member of the progressive rock band Makkiwhipdies. That band eventually broke up and Cosgrove embarked on his solo career.

Gift Of Time was released in 2008 but I am hearing it for the first time. Cosgrove plays all the instruments with the music being synth and keyboard heavy. Influences include Mike Oldfield and Vangelis. This is a very upbeat record, quite melodic and not overly complex. Bits of electronica and new age can also be heard. Cosgrove definitely concentrates on the songs, lots of synth swells, samples and choral vocals. For some this might be a little light weight but I like it for the most part. I found this music works well playing in the background or listening on the headphones when you just want to relax. It is all very pleasant and easy on the ears although nothing earth shattering.

The title track starts the record off with shimmering keys and a somewhat poppy sound with electronic beats and a head sticking melody. "Sombrero" is another synth heavy track, although a little darker with spacier textures as well. Prog fans might like this a little more than the first track as there is more to sink your teeth into. "Tropic of Pleasure" is another Vangelis influenced track while "Dream Catcher" is a little heavier, sounding almost like electronica in places.

The rest of the songs sound a little similar which may wear thin after a while. We shall see.

Cosgrove also did his own producing and engineering and sonically the music sounds very good. There is no doubt the man has talent.

Gift Of Time offers the listener well played instrumental keyboard/synth music. It is not the most complex stuff I have heard but overall a nice album. Fans of Vangelis should like this very much.
