Black Tusk: Tend No Wounds (EP)

Black Tusk may be one of my favorite bands. When I saw them in concert a few months ago, I was blown away by their energy, by the sheer force of their music and their performance. As most readers know, they are a central part of that strong bunch of metal bands from Georgia that are helping to keep good metal playing consistently in our ears. To my mind, they are a leading light in their genre, a band committed to keeping sludge and doom relevant and strong.

Black Tusk seems to release music at a steady pace. Since Set the Dial, they've put out a split with Dead Yet? and now offer up this EP. Every release, long or short, by Black Tusk has certain highlights. On the split with Dead Yet? it was the awesome "Iron Giant." With this release I really liked "Truth Untold" and "In Days of Woe."

My main complaint about this EP is that it doesn't seem to offer anything terribly new. I don't want these guys to change a thing, but they sound slightly like they've found a style that works for them and don't want to vary from it too much. I missed the sheer excitement that tracks like "Brewing the Storm" and "Bring Me Darkness" from Set the Dial had. Those songs were bold and magical. With this release, Black Tusk is still awesome, but they seem comfortable, in need of a short creative recharging. Still, any Black Tusk is worth a spin and this EP is no exception. Let's just hope that their next full length reminds us of how powerful these guys can really be.
