Beyond Mortal Dreams: Dreaming Death

When I was a kid, my friends used to tell me that if I died in my dreams, I would never wake up. For a while after that, dreams always threatened to become nightmares. Even worse, I never knew if or when the dreaded death dream could come, making it all that more frightening. This EP, entitled Dreaming Death, reminded me of those old fears. Dreams can certainly be terrifying, perhaps even deadly.

Some of the members of this band have been in and out of the metal scene since the early 90s, playing under various names. Beyond Mortal Dreams has been around since the early 2000s and have already released two demos, one full-length album, and now this EP. I don't know how big they are outside of their native Australia, but they have made a strong impression locally as a brutal and uncompromising death metal band. Their sound is loud and heavy, sometimes to the point where the music borders on distorted noise. The four tracks on this album are good, if occasionally a little too muddy and repetitive. Still, the best tracks here are also the longest ones. Both "Feast of Carrion" and "Dreaming Death" are over five minutes long but they play to this band's strength of establishing a devastating and brutal sound that they then break up with long melodic guitar leads. The other tracks are good (including the Beherit cover) but I preferred those that blended the melodic with the doom and gloom.

Track Listing:
1. Feast of Carrion
2. The Filth of their God
3. Dreaming Death
4. Beast of Damnation (Beherit Cover)
