Copernicus: Deeper

Let me start this review by saying this album will not be for everyone and sadly, that is also true for this reviewer. This is not so much music as it is a platform for Copernicus's poetic rantings and musings on how he perceives humanity. For those of you who don't know, Copernicus is a beat poet who has been putting out records for nearly thirty years. This review is of his album Deeper, originally released as an LP in 1987 and now remastered for, ahem, all of us to enjoy. While I give the artist credit for his rather unusual philosophical views and for being true to himself, the music here is just not for me. Avant-garde jazz, lots of improvisation and just flat out weirdness is what you will uncover.

As soon as I heard the primal screams of 'Oh God!!!!' in the first track I just knew this one going to be a rough ride. I liked "Son Of A Bitch From The North" a little better as the moody background music is a bit interesting in a creepy sort of way with some pretty cool bass as well. It is unfortunate, however, that the vocals totally ruin the song for me. In the strangely titled "Chichen-Itza Elvis", the song references an ancient Mayan city, it is the same story. Getting through the often harsh vocals is a real chore. And so it is with the rest of the album.

Although there are some highlights musically, like the jazzy reggae groove of "The Death Of Joe Apples", my favourite song on the disc, it just wasn't enough.

I hate to be so negative but this one only earns 1.5 stars. Sorry.
