Reserve de Marche: The Last Twenty Years

A three-piece ensemble specializing in progressive, post-rock, and sludge, Russia's Reserve de Marche makes a bold entrance with debut LP The Last Twenty Years. Formed in 2010 by guitarist Alexander Alekseev, the trio is rounded out by bassist Nikita Kharitonov and drummer Dmitry Pomogaev. They've been compared to Russian Circles, Sigur Rós, Anekdoten, and Radiohead, and for good reason, as their sound is an exciting expression that balances darkness and light with ease. It's not especially varied or inviting, but it is invigorating.

"Calorie" burns along at a controlled pace after its delicate and sparse beginning. A central riff provides the foundation for the other timbres to connect like a jigsaw puzzle. There are a few very heavy riffs thrown in, but for the most part the track is more dreamy than disastrous. "Le Garage," on the other hand, is fierce and desperate, as if it's a warning for impending doom, while "Iron Flow" and "Stephan's Dream" easily recall Tool circa Lateralus. There's a bit of hope within the subtext of "Song for Hedgehog" and "Frozen Time," which is due mostly to their gazing guitar effects.

All in all, The Last Twenty Years feels fairly inspired and earnest despite its repetitiveness and bleakness. The trio does a lot with their limitations, giving the album a larger-than-life scope and a good array of dynamics. It's quite strong for a debut, and with any luck and a lot of dedication, its successor will blow listener's away.
