Sirniö, Jari: Allofónus – The Final Gathering

Allofónus – The Final Gathering is the new recording by Finnish musician Jari Sirniö. This music is a movie for your ears, a soundtrack for your mind. There are aspects of folk and Celtic music, world beat, ambient, and much more contained in these eleven tracks.

If some of this music was set to screen, I would imagine an aerial viewpoint flying over a vast mountainside, or a chilly nighttime scene with folks singing and playing around a bonfire. Predominantly acoustic in nature, there is a woodsy, natural feel to the music.

Jari's vocals are laid back and honest, never flashy. Additional vocals are provided by Hanna Nieminen on a handful of tracks and her voice truly takes the music to another level with her sweet and thoughtful delivery.

"Welcome to Allofónus" is comprised of different sections and instrumental combinations as an overture of sorts. Hanna opens "This Home" in a mesmerizing fashion and it continues with nylon guitar accompaniment.

The Irish low-whistle flute is featured in "Final Gathering," lending a folksy sound in addition to the drums that pulse the song along. What sounds like an accordion opens "Child of the Meadow" and it sounds perfect with the synthesizer undercurrent. Violin and nylon string then pick up for a time until Hanna sings over a sole piano. Her innocent-sounding voice is ideal for this selection.

Harps, ambient sounds of water and birds, spoken-word, percussion, and electronica make appearances on the forthcoming tracks. The more time I've spent with Allofónus – The Final Gathering, the more I'm reminded of Jon Anderson; not in the vocal delivery or actual music, but in the composition and sound collages for which he has become known. Jari Sirniö has composed an aural journey to foreign places we can reach inside our mind's eye.
