Eyeconoclast: Drones of the Awakening
Eyeconoclast is an Italian Death Metal band that's been putting out strong and uncompromising music since the early 2000s. After years of establishing their presence at home, they are now hoping to spread their sound to a larger, more global, audience. With this new album, their first from Prosthetic Records, the band offers listeners nearly an hour of intense, aggressive, and powerful metal. Fans of the band probably already know that this album also introduces Giuseppe Di Giorgio on vocals. From start to finish, his voice is harsh and rough, a mixture of a deep growl and something that approaches melodic declaiming.
The song titles on this album evoke a strong science fiction theme, particularly the recent interest in questions of post-humanism. Death Metal is a great venue for similar kinds of questions, those that ask what human beings will be like in a future where their bodies are supplemented so much by technology that they move beyond the merely human. The lyrics aren't clear from the singing—common to this style of metal, of course—but I assume that they stick with such themes from beginning to end.
The tracks here are all straight-ahead Death Metal played at blistering speeds. The riffs move past quickly, but they are memorable and strong. Interested listeners should definitely check out "XXX—Manifest of Involution" for an introduction to these guys at their most powerful. Other highlights on the album include "Obsolesced" and "Proclaiming from Dead Dimensions." For me, the best track was easily "Dawn of the Promethean Artilect." The riffs are killer and the guitar harmonies during the last 30-40 seconds were a welcome reminder that these guys know how to use melody when necessary. This is a powerful album, uncompromising and brutal, technical and fascinating. Listen to it with headphones and enjoy.
