Tales of the Old: The Passageway from Hell to Earth
EPs are both good and bad. They are easy to review. But they only give you a taste of what's to come. So it is with Tales of the Old's The Passageway from Hell to Earth.
Tales of the Old describes themselves as "a dark symphonic metal band from Athens, Greece". The album cover artwork suggests the same. The band was formed in 2010, by keyboard player Mike Tzanakis, who also serves as the composer and arranger of their music. The rest of the band includes Vassilis Papadimitriou, on lead vocals; Steve Mihalenas, on guitars; John Katn, on bass; and John Prodromou, on drums. If you like Rhapsody, Nightwish, Therion, and Haggard, this three song EP should be on your wish list.
On the three featured tracks, guest female vocalist, Androniki Skoula, from the Greek band Chaostar, delivers a powerful operatic sound that will thrill your senses. The musicianship is wonderful in its keyboard influenced sound. However, don't be fooled, the drums will rock your walls and the guitar work is both bold and brilliant. They even had the genius foresight to include a children's choir to add to the mystery and fullness of the sound produced. Dragon lore, and other Tolkien - like themes dominate the lyrics, so the tale should be interesting enough for a full length album. Hopefully that is in the works.
