Lone Crows, The: The Lone Crows

US stoner/psych act The Lone Crows have delivered a pretty tasty treat here on their self-titled debut for World in Sound. Comprised of Tim Barbeau (guitars/vocals), Joe Goff (drums), Julian Manzara (guitars), and Andy Battcher (bass), the band do a fine job of creating thick, moody, riff driven songs that take influence of classic '70s acts but also some modern ones as well.

Bits of Led Zeppelin, Alice in Chains, Wolfmother, Humble Pie, Kyuss, The Doors, Black Sabbath, and Nirvana can he heard throughout the CD, bridging the old and the new, as The Lone Crows make no bones about what they are trying to do here. Check out the stinging, Jimmy Page styled blues rock solos & riffage on the dark "Lone Crow", or the Alice in Chains meets Kyuss stoner/doom/grunge attack of the plodding & quite menacing "Can't Go Home Again". "Heard Your Call" is like a meeting of Zeppelin & Humble Pie (with some great vocals from Barbeau), and the Free/Santana inspired jams on "Moonshine" and "The Ghost" will instantly take you back to 1971. The band rumbles along like vintage Cactus on the boogie drenched heavy rock of "When I Move On" and "The Crawl", featuring some meaty riffs and blistering solos from Barbeau & Manzara. "Running' Through My Head" is a slow blues rave-up featuring blistering guitar and a scorching guest organ solo from Anders Nelson.

Though a few songs would have benefitted from some upbeat arrangements in spots, overall The Lone Crows is an enjoyable journey into '70s heavy blues rock, psychedelia, stoner, and grunge styles. I'd advise you to keep a close eye on these guys.
