From Mississauga comes the four piece sludge act that call themselves Hammerhands, and their debut album Glaciers is now being unleashed. Featuring ex members of such bands as The Love and Terror Cult and Dance Electric, Hammerhands is comprised of NJ Borreta (vocals, guitars, cello, viola), Collin Young (guitars, backing vocals), Justin Hunt (bass, backing vocals), and Jon Galletly (drums, backing vocals). Not a hell of a lot that is original here on Glaciers, but the band have a knack for creating huge slabs of droning, doomy sludge along the lines of Sleep, Isis, Pelican, Kyuss, Sunn 0))), and Neurosis. Though there are hardcore styled bellows splattered around the album, for the most part it's all about the mountainous waves of crushing guitar sludge, best experienced on "Floods", Glaciers", "Meatbags" and of course the 30-minute "Equus". The latter will no doubt be a testament to your attention span, as it's basically a half-hour of droning riffs and feedback that unless you are a fan of Sleep's classic dirge-fest Dopesmoker, you will be hard pressed to find much of interest. Sludge and doom lovers however will surely enjoy much of the hypnotic and massive sounds permeating this disc and though it's not going to set the genre on fire, Glaciers is indeed some heavy and trippy stuff for sure.
