Deathchain: Ritual Death Metal

Deathchain has a creative goal to have the word "dead" or "death" in the titles of every album. With this new release—their sixth—they continue to achieve that goal, but they do so by reminding listeners that one of the core elements of death metal is its commitment to ritualistic themes. All the songs on this album revolve around that theme and do so by contemplating the summoning of various Mesopotamian Gods. There aren't many surprises here, but the album is done so well that it seems like a fresh and new musical offering.

For me, the highlights of the album were "Our Lady Under the Earth," "Abzu Doom," and "Tiamat's Eyes of Death." I also liked the opening track "Voice of Sharur," an introductory piano melody that sets up an uncanny feel to the album as a whole.

Simply put: this album is nothing less than straightforward death metal done really well. It offers few surprises, but delivers 45 minutes of strong and intense music.
