ASG: Blood Drive

This is an awesome new release that should not only attract a wide audience, but also an appreciative one. I mean, the whole thing is just so damn good; it's warm and inviting, like a hot drink on a cool night. In the last couple of weeks, I've listened to this album at least 6 times and find myself looking forward to its hooks, its choruses and its melodies with each new listen. Even the lyrics are strong and interesting. I shouldn't gush, but I loved this album and think other people will, too.

The best thing about this album is the warmth of its musical vibe. From start to finish, the album conveys a great deal of that pleasant distorted hum, the one that caused so many people to fall in love with hard rock in the first place. This album takes that sound and makes it fresh and new all over again. There's also a firm and unapologetic commitment to melody here that suits the music perfectly.

ASG is not an extreme metal band and some people may pass this one over simply because of that. Yes, the vocals are clean and the lyrics are clear, but those things shouldn't turn people away. It's wonderful to hear someone actually sing for once. Put this one on a rotation with some of the best stoner metal releases of the past few years.

I don't know what ASG stands for, but I'm going to suggest that it stands for A Sweet Gift. I know that's corny, but it's accurate. This album is nothing less than a pure delight.
