Explosion Technology: Proiavlenie

This is a difficult album for me to review. Part of the problem is that I don't think I'm the right audience for this album. The music here such a hybrid of different styles and influences that I'm not sure exactly what to make of it. I do recognize an innovative spirit at work here and I certainly admire the high level of energy on each track, but the album just comes off as unfocused and messy. The band describes its music as "Alternative/Electro Metal" with a touch of "Soundtrack music" but I'm not sure exactly what to make of those labels and of the music they are meant to describe. Music, no matter what label we give it, has to pass the liking test and this album just doesn't do that for me. This music sounds like a strange collection of metalcore and sound effects glued together with beats and singing.

On the positive side, there are also some cool experiments with time signatures as well as some unconventional rhythms. Some tracks have a drone-like pulse going in the background that I found interesting. The vocal style, too, has a rhythmic declamatory style that was engaging at times. Still, the whole thing just didn't work for me. I have no doubt that there are other listeners out there that will find much to enjoy here; after all, the music here is highly experimental, a cut against convention.

With apologies to the band and to the readers, I am unable to list the tracks on this album. The titles are all in Ukranian and I can't reproduce them accurately. My attempts to copy them from other sources aren't working, either. There is a site (https://soundcloud.com/explosion-technology#play) that has the song titles translated into English but they are not in the right order and there are more tracks on the site than on the album. I can say that this album offers nine new tracks and comes in at just under 40 minutes.
