This Misery Garden: Cornerstone

Let me start off this review by saying that I don't like to slag bands and say negative things about albums that I don't like. I know most bands spend a lot of time and sweat for little pay to make what they feel is the best album that they can. However, if I don't like an album, I am obligated as a reviewer to say so. That being said, I have to say I don't like Cornerstone and the reason I don't like it is because I just don't like the style of music that This Misery Garden plays.

Now, just because *I* don't like the band's music is no reason that you won't. In fact, I'm about 80% sure that most mainstream metal and hard rock fans will love this album. Why? Because This Misery Garden play the "metal lite" style that is so popular with the masses and specifically readers of publications such as Metal Hammer.

The band's sound could essentially be described as a cross between "metal" lite bands like Stained, Sevendust, Disturbed etc., mixed with enough melancholy as to sound vaguely similar to modern day Katatonia. In other words, this is the type of stuff that people who listen to mainstream rock stations will lap up, complete with an edginess as to make it seem cutting edge to the masses. To my ears this sounds completely dull, but I'm sure to someone new to metal this will sound like a revelation.

People who are into the more mainstream side of things would be wise to check this out as they will probably find a lot here to love. However, those of us who yearn for something a bit less formulated would do well to stay far away.
