Genus is the promising debut album from Twisted Species, a band that hails from the relatively tranquil surroundings of the deep English Midlands. You could be forgiven for thinking they were born and bred on the other side of the Atlantic as make no mistake these guys play revved up rock with a Southern vibe and with more than a passing nod in the direction of Seattle. Hard edged, toughened up rockers are pretty much par for the course here, kicking off with the smoldering 'Hold Me Down' and continuing in largely the same vein across the ten tracks. The raw energy of 'Feed What You Crave' and the down and dirty blues of 'Blood of Angels' are the other stand out moments and, coming across strongly throughout, is the bands passion, desire and belief in what they are about.
At times the moody vocals of Dave Gandon could do with being a bit more to the forefront as they occasionally get lost in the mix but this is only a minor quibble. With the release of Genus behind them Twisted Species can now progress to making their mark on the gig circuit and having caught them in action a couple of months back it would seem they are already well on their way to achieving precisely that. A solid debut effort from a band that clearly has the potential to do very well.
