First Aid: Coelacanth Ale

"The First Aid Brewing Co. proudly presents Coelacanth Ale! .Though the recipe and ingredients were thought to be extinct, First Aid's pursuit of quality and originality brings this ancient brew back to the civilized world "

These humourous words appear on the back of the CD. Much like the coelacanth fish which was thought to be extinct until it was rediscovered, so was progressive music thought extinct at the time most of these tracks were penned and recorded.

Primarily blending AOR and fusion, this mostly instrumental record is a hit and miss affair containing some really strong fusion numbers ( Dedrock,The Clean Forest, Unique New York) and some very weak vocal numbers (City Lights, Rut Of Information, Take It On The Amber) where the band may have been thinking ( and as usual, idealistically) about some kind of radio potential. In a nutshell , the instrumental pieces carry the disc as the vocal tracks fall well short of the mark and could easily have been left out entirely .The end result would have been a shorter, tighter disc which would have definitely scored higher marks.

Had I run across these guys when this music was still fresh, I probably would have been much more impressed. However, I don't feel that the majority of the numbers have aged well enough to give this album a ringing endorsement.
