Odd Dimension: The Last Embrace to Humanity

Italian proggers Odd Dimension return to the fray two years after their excellent debut album Symmetrical , and what could be more proggy than a concept album? The Last Embrace to Humanity is structured around an ambitious concept about the alienation of mankind, in an era in which everything tends to be severely damaged or even destroyed in the name of progress. Michele Luppi (Vision Divine, Secret Sphere, Thaurorod) guests on "It's So Late". So what's not to love? Very little actually.

In terms of quality The Last Embrace to Humanity picks up just where Symmetrical left things. Obvious and arguably lazy reference points would be Threshold, Fates Warning (except I find Odd Dimension much easier to embrace for some almost intangible reason) and the inevitable Dream Theater. This record is so good however, that it can very much be taken on its own terms especially the excellent melodramatic if slightly overwrought "The New Line of Time". In another world "Another Time" would be the kind of song which mainstream media would give a chance to.

Perhaps the greatest strength of this record is that it is pretty short – only eight tracks, which I find these days is a bit of a blessing. It actually made me wanting to hear it again rather than desperately look for something different and in 2013 that is quite rare.
